Chewing activities, sorting behaviour and ruminal fermentation of lactating dairy cows fed diets with similar proportions of undigested neutral detergent fibre with wheat straw substituted for alfalfa hay, corn silage or both

چکیده
Feeding behaviour and ruminal fermentation of dairy cows were evaluated when fed diets formulated to supply a similar proportion undigested neutral detergent fibre (uNDF) after 30-h incubation (uNDF30), while wheat straw (WS) replaced for corn silage (CS), alfalfa hay (AH) or both. In randomised block design, 32 multiparous Holstein (days in milk = 78 ± 11 d, production 56 6 kg/d) used. AH CS the only forage sources control diet (CSAH). WS was substituted (WSCS), (WSAH) both (WSCSAH) on uNDF30 basis. Dry matter consumption from 24 h feed delivery lower WSAH than WSCS CSAH. No difference existed total time spent eating (250 min/d), rumination (460 min/d) chewing (710 min/d). Total concentration volatile fatty acids (VFAs) rumen not different between treatments but propionate CSAH (19.0 vs. 24.1 mM/100 mM). Effect of yeast culture supplementation of alfalfa silage or alfalfa hay fed to lactating dairy cows
متن کامل
Performance of lactating dairy cows fed either alfalfa silage or alfalfa hay as the sole forage.
Alfalfa was harvested from alternate windrows as 40% DM silage or hay in small rectangular bales and fed in two 12-wk 4 x 4 Latin square trials, each with 20 multiparous lactating cows (4 with ruminal cannulas). Diets contained (DM basis) 69 (trial 1) or 66% (trial 2) alfalfa, 26 to 33% high moisture corn, 1.3% minerals and vitamins, and about 1.6 Mcal of NEL/kg of DM. In trial 1, second-cuttin...
متن کاملSynthesis of microbial protein in ruminally cannulated cows fed alfalfa silage, alfalfa hay, or corn silage.
Six ruminally cannulated cows were used in an experiment with a 3 x 3 Latin square design. Three all forage diets-alfalfa silage, alfalfa hay, or corn silage plus 2.2% urea (DM basis)-were fed for ad libitum intake four times daily. The microbial protein marker 15NH3 and the liquid marker Cr-EDTA were infused continuously into the rumen for 72 and 48 h, respectively; the solid marker, Yb-labele...
متن کاملEffects of Fat Supplementation and Chop Length on Milk Composition and Ruminal Fermentation of Cows Fed Diets Containing Alfalfa Silage
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of fat supplementation for enhancing milk conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in early lactation without affecting ruminal fermentation. 24 Holstein dairy cows were assigned to a completely randomized design employing a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement. Factors were particle size (15 and 25 mm) and two different sources of alfalfa supplemented with and wit...
متن کاملPotential of fermentation byproducts as nitrogen supplements for lactating dairy cows.
Two feeding trials evaluated several byproducts from commercial amino acid fermentations as N supplements for lactating cows. Trial 1 was a replicated 5 x 5 Latin square that used 2-wk periods and 25 Holstein cows (five with ruminal cannulae) fed diets containing [dry matter (DM) basis] 28% alfalfa silage, 31% corn silage, 28% high moisture ear corn plus 4 percentage units of crude protein (CP)...
